Named for Robert A. Terrell, a pioneer European-American settler, Terrell, Texas was originally a railroad town and first settled in 1848. Jasper Johnson became the first postmaster when the post office opened in 1873. The community was incorporated in 1875, and by the mid-1880s, had a population of 3,000, served by three weekly newspapers, three flour mills, two banks, two hotels, three cotton gins and nine churches. Terrell State Hospital (then called The North Texas Insane Asylum) was opened in Terrell in 1885 to help relieve overcrowding at the state institution in Austin. Like many areas in Texas, Terrell played a big role in World War II providing a traning ground for British pilots at what is now the municipal airport. The estimated population is just over 17,000 and Terrell is located 32 miles east of Dallas, Texas.
