Before Wylie, Texas, it was a small town called Nickelville. Historical accounts say it was so named because a nickel store was located there, other accounts recall a local townsperson joked that no one who lived there “was worth a plug nickel.” However, in 1885, Col. W.D. Wylie, from Paris, Texas, was anxious to have a town named after him. Dr. John Butler, Nickelville’s earliest settler, submitted Wylie’s name to the town leaders, and, when the application for the new post office was received in 1886, the name Wylie became official. Col. Wylie purchased 100 acres of land and began dividing it into city lots along the railroad right-of-way. In 1887 the town was incorporated. By the mid-1910s, shipping by rail was becoming more and more profitable and the area began producing sweet white onions and cotton. Unlike many rural Texas communities, Wylie grew during the Great Depression and gained 914 residents by 1940. In part, this was a result of increased dairy farming to meet the demands of nearby Dallas. Onions grew to become the town’s cash crop in the 30s and 40s. “Wide Awake Wylie” became the city’s nickname in the late 40s and 50s, a result of late night get-togethers of its citizens and businesses that stayed open until midnight on some evenings and it continued to be considered the onion capital of the world into the 60s. Now a bedroom community to Dallas, Wylie hosts a population of over 50, 000 and is continueing to grow.
