Rockwall, TX in the early 1800s, well the area that was to become Rockwall, Texas, was originally occupied by Caddo Indians and later Creek Indians began to arrive. When the first Anglo-Americans arrived sometime in the 1840s, they found these Indian groups in conflict among themselves, so had little problem moving into the territory. Ten years later, farmers digging a well discovered a rock wall that crossed the county. Since that time, scientists have determined that this is a natural geographic formation, but folk tales continue to say that it was built by prehistoric natives. When the town of Rockwall was formed, it was named for the rock formation. n 1836, the area was established as part of Nacogdoches County, and in 1845, when Texas joined the Union, it was included in Henderson County. Kaufman County was formed in 1847, with the region now known as Rockwall County placed in Kaufman County. Citizens thought the county seat of Kaufman was too inconvenient, and in 1873, Rockwall County was formed. In the early 1950s when the Southwest’s first aluminum plant opened a factory in Rockwall, the city adopted the slogan “The Aluminum Capital of the Industrial Southwest”. And a neighborhood of 70 new homes was developed to provide housing for company employees. Bounded by Lake Ray Hubbard, Rockwall has become a very desirable residential area for the continuously growing Dallas Metropolitan area.
