Here is a bit of history for you. The land that is now Murphy, Texas, was part of the empresario grants issued by the Peter’s Colony before Texas was a state. The first settlers in the area were Comfort and Lydia McMillen and their six children, who arrived from Arkansas in 1846, and settled on a branch of Maxwell Creek. With the McMillen family came Lydia’s two brothers. By 1850, the William and Dorothy Murphy family also settled on Maxwell Creek. These founding fathers were rugged individualists of Scotch-Irish descent and were drawn to the area by abundant land, fertile soil, a long growing season, ample rainfall, bountiful fish, wild game and sufficient timber for building cabins. By 1888, the town was renamed for James Murphy, who donated land for the Murphy Train Depot. The Old Murphy Schoolhouse, which housed elementary and high school students, was built in 1938 as a WPA project. From the 1880s until the 1950s Murphy served as a shipping point for area farmers and stock raisers. Though the rural community was never very large, its population was reduced to 150 by the mid-1950s and to 135 by 1961. With the opening of the President George Bush Turnpike in 2000, economic development and residential growth has reawakened Murphy, steadily increasing to the current population of 18,800. Murphy is two miles south of the famed Southfork Ranch.
