As county seat, the city provided farmers with cotton mills and gins, a cotton compress, cottonseed oil mill, flour and corn, as well as banks, churches, schools, newspapers and even an opera house. Later businesses came to include a an ice company, a large dairy, textile mill and a garment-manufacturing company. Farmers and manufacturers could ship goods on the Houston and Texas Central Railway, which reached McKinney in 1872, and, beginning in 1881, on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad. From 1908 to 1948 the Texas Electric Railroad stopped through McKinney on its way from Dennison to Dallas and then on to Waco. In 1943, the U.S. Army built Ashburn General Hospital (now the McKinney Job Corps Center). By 1953, the city had a population of more than 10,000 and 355 businesses. The town continued to serve as an agribusiness center for the county until the late 1960s. But by the 70s McKinney was surpassed in size by Plano and in the mid-80s had become a commuter center for residents who worked in Plano and Dallas.
