Did you know that Farmersville, Texas, originated in 1849 as a settlement on the Jefferson-McKinney Road near Republic of Texas National Road? It was actually named by the pioneers for their chief occupation. In the early days the settlement was a major railroad shipping point for pest resistant bois d’arc posts (used in early pier and beam home construction) and cattle. Farmersville began as a trading center for the farmers who were rapidly settling the area and in later years corn, maize and cotton became major crops, along with cantaloupes and onions. William Gotcher donated the site of the present town square in 1859, and John S. Rike became the first mayor when the town was incorporated in 1873. The town’s public school system was established around 1890. Both the First National Bank at Farmersville and the Farmersville Times newspaper, were founded in 1885 and were still in operation in 1988, with First Bank being oldest independent bank remaining in Collin County and one of the oldest in the state. Audie Murphy was born near Farmersville. He lived and worked here for a time before his entry into the United States Army and used his sister’s address in Farmersville as his own while he was overseas. An area rich in history, Farmersville currently has 16 historical markers.
