Kerens: The birth place of Big Tex
The residents of Kerens built a 49 foot tall Santa Claus in 1949. The iron drill casing and paper mache jolly figure was constructed to encourage holiday sales. In 1951 the Santa was purchased by the State Fair president who commisioned a Dallas artist to transform Santa into a cowboy for the annual States Fair.
The community of Kerens was established in 1881 as a result of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway of Texas line that had been built in the county. Locals from the surrounding communities transplanted themselves to this fledgling town and helped establish the community we know today.
